Belmont Police Log, Sept. 6-15: Person found living inside unoccupied Channing Road home that's for sale

The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. 

Saturday, Sept. 6

11:24 a.m.: Unwanted person inside a Channing Road property that is for sale. Personal belongings were found on the third floor, including several pairs of clothes, men’s personal hygiene gear, trading cards, toy cars, notebooks, broken pipe with brown residue inside and a sleeping bag, as well as a Suffolk County jail discharge paperwork, a Mass DTA card, and Chase Bank paperwork. The realtor believes the utility key to the house was stolen to gain entry. The locks will be changed, and the police will conduct special checks in the area to ensure nobody returns.

Sunday, Sept. 7

1:41 p.m.: A Belmont patrol officer stopped a vehicle speeding on Common Street. The male operator did not have his license in his possession and said he was unaware of the speed limit because he is new to the area. He was coming from his apartment in Watertown and visiting a friend in Somerville. A Glock case was observed in the trunk of the vehicle and a holstered firearm was laying in the front passenger seat. The driver was ordered out of the vehicle and asked for his license to carry. He did not have it on him, but the firearm was registered.  The firearm was loaded with one in the chamber. The firearm was temporarily confiscated. The driver was issued a citation for license not in possession and speeding at a rate exceeding the posted limit.

5:20 p.m. A Belmont resident reported her son missing. He was last at work Sept. 1 and has not shown up for work since. He has a history of opiate use and has been in and out of treatment multiple times. She is concerned he is using again. They have a strained relationship and last spoke on July 24th. Belmont Police attempted to call the son but were unable to reach him or leave a voice mail. Area hospitals were contacted, and he was not a patient at any of them. Boston Police were notified.

Monday, Sept. 8

7:32 p.m.: A man came into the station to report a hit and run. His vehicle was hit on Pleasant Street while at a red light outside the station on Pleasant Street. A dark Jeep Wrangler crashed into him at a high rate of speed. His driver’s side mirror was hit, and the rear driver’s side of his vehicle was sideswiped.

9:50 p.m.: A Claflin Street resident reported a motor vehicle break-in in progress. While on the phone with the police, the victim was watching a man rifle through his neighbor’s vehicle. Officers arrived and saw the man exiting the vehicle. He ran with his bag towards the backyard of a home on Claflin Street. Officers pursued him. A Belmont Police officer was able to corner him and ordered him to get on the ground. He ignored the officer’s orders, saying, “I’m must a homeless guy.” He began to walk towards the officer and the officer yelled for him to get on the ground. He then began to walk towards the other side of the house.  Another officer arrived on the scene and tackled the man to the ground. He tucked is arms under his chest refusing to put his hands behind his back. Officers were able to gain control of his arms and handcuff him. A box cutter was found next to a vehicle at the home as well as a blanket and a pair of earphones. The homeowner said he was missing $6 from the vehicle. The money was found inside the man in custody’s bag. The box cutter and blanket did not belong to the homeowners. The man was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle and larceny under $1,200.

Tuesday, Sept. 9

9:15 a.m.: Belmont Housing Authority reported property damage. The owner of a vehicle parked in a designated spot in the parking lot off of Pearson Road said her front right tire was slashed and flat.

Wednesday, Sept. 10

8:08 p.m.: A Claflin Street resident reported two motor vehicles broken into. They were both unlocked. An old blue and red duffle bag with a broken zipper were missing from one of the vehicles. It contained a pair of grey sweatpants, a pair of black sneakers, a red padlock, a blue soap container and a pair of lifting gloves. The car was rifled through, and her center console and glove box were left open and all the items taken out. The other vehicle was rifled through, but the owner is unsure if anything is missing. The bag was found at another property.

Sunday, Sept 14

12:26 p.m.: A White Street resident reported someone took “Keep American Great” sign from the second-floor balcony of his home. The sign is valued at approximately $50.

4:07 p.m.: A Newcastle Road resident reported an individual seen on security cameras at approximately 2:30 a.m. She believes the individual was looking around their house and a neighbor’s house, which is under construction and has tools and construction equipment throughout the front yard. Camera footage shows a white male, approximately 5-feet-six-inches, seen pacing up and down Newcastle Road, looking into several yards. A black sedan was seen stopping in front of a Newcastle Road home several times.

5:23 p.m.: An employee of Hillside Gardens reported a stolen bicycle. It was in the back of the property, inside the fence by 280 Blanchard Road, which abuts the parking lot of 2 Brighton St. It’s a black, electric Tamobyke valued at $3,500. A bicycle and two bags were left in the area where the bicycle was stolen from containing miscellaneous clothing, a backpack, food, syringes, and bolt cutters. An individual was scene in the area prior to the bike going missing. He was described as a white male, approximately 5-feet-eight-inches, wearing all black.

Monday, Sept. 15

6:40 a.m.: Possible larceny from a post office mailbox at 492 Trapelo Road was reported. A black male wearing all black clothing was seen opening the lower compartment of a mailbox, grabbing a stack of mail and getting into the passenger seat of a gray SUV with a Mass. Registration beginning with 5KNE. The car fled on Trapelo Road towards Cambridge. An Officer searched for the potential suspect vehicle but was unable to locate it.

10:30 a.m.: A realtor for a home for sale on Channing Road said someone entered the home during the evening. Pieces of cardboard were found over the windows, and a roll of carpet was rolled out on the floor. The owner of the property said the locks will be changed. Extra checks of the house will continue until they are able to get a locksmith to the home.

11:39 a.m.: Suspicious activity reported on Audobon Lane. A silver sedan followed a woman home.  She thought it was someone her husband hired to do construction work. The operator of the vehicle rolled down his driver’s side window. She asked if she could help him and he drove off at a high rate of speed.

8:40 p.m.: The realtor of a property on Channing Road reported that someone was inside the unoccupied home on the market. When officers and a K-9 arrived, a man came down from the third floor. He was asked to drop the items in his hands and was placed under arrest. He said he owned the house and bought it for $3 million from the owner. He was charged with breaking and entering and misdemeanor.

9:21 p.m.: An Alma Avenue resident reported two suspicious juveniles dressed in black were breaking onto motor vehicles. They were seen in an exterior parking garage on Alma Avenue. They took off when officers arrived. At 9:58 p.m., her Ring camera captured them walking by her home and aiming a flashlight at her driveway.
