Belmont Police Log, Dec. 6-13: Vehicles stolen on Prentiss Lane and Tobey Road, pedestrian struck on Belmont Street while holding cat carrier with two cats inside, one cat missing

The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. 

Friday, Dec. 6

3 p.m.: A Crestview Road resident reported suspicious activity. A few nights ago she heard someone at her door, shaking it back and forth as though trying to get inside. Entry was never gained. The next morning she noticed two sets of footprints in the snow walking away from her house, down the driveway. She is nervous about who was in her yard. She will be installing a security camera and lights.

5:37 p.m.: A Wilson Road resident reported suspicious activity. At 5:35 p.m., he heard a knock on his apartment door. The individuals announced themselves as girl scouts selling cookies. Then, two unknown male parties followed up saying they were with Verizon, in area due to customer complaints regarding internet issues. He told the individuals through the door he does not have Verizon. They left the residence. He was not able to see who they were. The main entry door to the house was unlocked. He was advised to secure the front door to avoid any further solicitors entering the three-family unit. Other tenants in the building were unsure if anyone attempted to solicit them and did not hear anything.

Saturday, Dec. 7

11:20 a.m.: Vandalism reported to a motor vehicle in the Star Market parking lot. The front passenger side window was smashed. It is unclear if the damage was caused by the wind. Nothing was taken from the vehicle.

1:50 p.m.: Collision at the intersection of Trapelo Road and Bartlett Avenue between a 2013 Ford operated by a Watertown woman and a 2023 Honda operated by a Belmont man. The operator of the 2013 Ford was issued a citation for failure to yield/stop.

Sunday, Dec. 8

3:05 p.m.: A Belmont man who loaned his car to someone a few days prior for a place to sleep, said the person was involved in a motor vehicle accident with the loaned vehicle on Dec. 1 at 1:25 a.m. He did not have permission to operate the vehicle. He was instructed to file a police report in Belmont.

Monday, Dec. 9

12:50 p.m.: Suspicious activity reported by a resident on St. James Court. A male party came to the resident’s door, trying to open it when she did not answer. She began talking to him through the Ring doorbell and he left. She took a photo of the vehicle and provided videos and photo of the incident. In the video, the male party is inquiring about the neighborhood and neighbors as he is interested in the property next door that is being built. He leaves when she tells him she does not have time to speak with him. Belmont Police attempted to call the registered owner of the vehicle, but the phone number is out of service.

3:36 p.m.: Residents complained about a downstairs neighbor who goes around the house slamming doors and screaming up the back stairs. The neighbor has made threats in the past to keep the volume down. Officers spoke to the neighbor who said she constantly hears her neighbors making loud noises. She admitted she has a temper and slams doors in retaliation. She has tried to speak to the landlord about the issue, but nothing came from it. She was advised to speak to her landlord again and call if a dispute were to happen again.

5:26 p.m.: Collision on Pleasant Street with possible injuries between a 2014 Mercedes operated by a Belmont woman and a 2010 Mazda operated by a Watertown man. The Mercedes was struck from behind by the Mazda. The operator of the Mercedes complained of neck and back pain and said her head felt fuzzy. It was raining heavily at the time of the accident. The operator of the Mazda had a cut on his right finger. He said he was unable to brake in time. There was significant damage to the Mazda and minor damage to the Mercedes. The operator of the Mercedes was transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Belmont Fire and Rescue also responded. The operator of the Mazda was issued a citation for following too closely.

6:12 p.m.: A Wilson Avenue resident reported suspicious activity. His Ring camera captured two people walking by his house. An unknown female walked on the sidewalk past his house, looking intently at his front porch. A male, leaning against his truck door across the street is also seen looking at his house. The truck had a white bed and black cab with a plow in the front. Several minutes after, the male is recorded walking out of his driveway onto the sidewalk carrying a set of gloves in his hand. Seconds later, the same female walks by the house and continues to look at it. He believes they may be working together. His camera did not capture anything else.

Tuesday, Dec. 10

11:01 a.m.: A 2020 Mazda operated by an Arlington man side swiped a parked 2021 Subaru owned by a Lexington woman. The operator of the Mazda was pulled over to make a call for work. As he attempted to merge back into traffic when the call ended, he struck the Subaru, which was unoccupied. The Mazda needed to be towed. The operator of the Mazda was issued a citation for improper passing.

11:45 a.m.: A Belmont resident reported a letter he received explaining he was unable to open a deposit account with Bank of America. He never attempted to open an account and knows his information is out on the “dark web” because he was a victim of data breach years ago. He has lifetime credit monitoring from Experion. No money has been lost as of the time of the report.

Wednesday, Dec. 11

6:20 a.m.: Stolen motor vehicle reported on Prentiss Lane. The owner of a white 2024 BMW said her car was parked in her driveway. When she woke up the next morning, it was gone. She is unsure if it was locked. The keys were not inside the vehicle. There were no valuables inside. The vehicle was entered into CJIS/NCIC. Belmont Police contacted BMW after hours support and reported the vehicle stolen. BMW as able to track the vehicle and advised its current location to an address in Medford. Medford Police were contacted and updated the vehicle’s whereabouts and were going to further investigate.

7:50 a.m.: A motor vehicle on Tobey Road was stolen overnight. The owner of the 2020 gray Volvo said the vehicle was parked in his driveway. This morning it was gone. He didn’t notice anything unusual in the area except a Feeney crew working near his house throughout the day. He is unsure if the vehicle was locked or if the keys were inside. A Celtics sweatshirt, hat, basketball bag, Michigan crocs and red winter coat were inside the vehicle. Ring camera footage in the area was investigated but nothing could be seen. The vehicle was entered into CJIS.

11 a.m.: A 2017 Cadillac travelling from Gilbert Road onto Trapelo Road failed to come to a complete stop at the designated Stop sign. It was determined from the vehicle’s license plate that the registration had a revoked insurance status since June 2024. Due to the status, the vehicle is also unregistered and was seized and towed. The operator was issued citations and a summons from Cambridge District Court for uninsured motor vehicle, unregistered motor vehicle and failure to stop/yield.

4:28 p.m.: A stolen Somerville vehicle was located on Tobey Road.

4:54 p.m.: A pedestrian was struck in the area of Conley’s Pub. Belmont Fire also responded. The pedestrian was on the sidewalk bleeding from the head. He was holding a cat carrier with two cats inside and a black umbrella.  He was leaving the Heal Veterinary Clinic on Belmont Street and in the middle of the crosswalk. Vehicles traveling Westbound would not stop, so he was waiting to continue crossing when a vehicle came out of nowhere and struck him. He went over the hood of the vehicle that struck him and is unsure if he struck his head on the vehicle or the pavement. The cat carrier was thrown from his grip. One of the kittens was located and taken into the care of the vet. The other kitten was not located. He was transported to Mass General Hospital. The owner of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian said she was driving on Belmont Street when she suddenly felt her vehicle strike someone. She did not observe anyone in the crosswalk and stopped immediately. There was another vehicle with its headlights on which obscured her vision while driving through the sidewalk. She believes her speed was 25 mph. The road conditions were wet and there was active rainfall at the time of the accident. There was minor damage to the left front of her vehicle. She was issued a citation for crosswalk violation. Security footage from the surveillance cameras of Ravello Italian Kitchen will be investigated.

Thursday, Dec. 12

12:28 p.m.: Collision between a 2023 Hyundai operated by an Arlington man and s 2020 Hyundai operated by a Newtonville woman on Pleasant Street by Winn Street. The operator of the 2023 Hyundai said trash barrels from the side of the road blew in front of his vehicle causing him to put on his brakes. There were heavy winds, and the road conditions were slick at the time of the crash. There was heavy front-end damage to the 2020 Hyundai and damage to the back bumper and hatch of the 2023 Hyundai.

12:30 p.m. A green United States Post Office mailbox on Clark Street was spray painted in black with the word, “N***a.” On the side. The United States Post Service was notified.

1:11 p.m.: An elderly female fell on Hull Street. She was bleeding from the face. She said she tripped and fell over on the sidewalk, which was pushed up due to a tree along the street. Neighbors said they have called the town to complain about the sidewalks on the street and have been told they’re on the list. The woman was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital.

4:14 p.m.: A Claflin Street resident said she received an email Nov. 19 that a package was delivered from Amazon. It contained a $12 spatula. When she returned home, she was unable to find the package and notified Amazon. They shipped out another spatula. Today, she received an email from Recreational Equipment Inc. that her package containing a $25 winter hat was delivered at 11:03 a.m. When she returned home at 3:45 p.m., she was unable to find her package. She notified REI and they will ship another hat. At this time, she is not out any money, and the goods were replaced.

10:30 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported a check he mailed was cashed for a different amount than he wrote it. The check mailed was for $1,200 to the Hopkin Foundation. He put it in the mailbox on Dec. 2 at the corner of Trapelo Road and Bartlett Avenue. When he checked his Bank of America account, he noticed a large withdrawal of $12,000. He discovered the check was altered. It was now made out to Nuno Evora and dated Dec. 9. It was cashed on Dec. 6. His account is still active and will monitor it and check with a credit reporting company.

Friday, Dec. 13

2:27 a.m.: A Trapelo Road resident reported his 2013 White Subaru was stolen. It was parked in his driveway and last seen at 11 p.m. At 2 a.m., his car was no longer there. He was behind by one payment and received a notice about the late payment. He is unsure if his vehicle was towed. It had a Christmas wreath on the front grill. The keys were left inside the vehicle. It was having battery problems recently. Also inside the vehicle were his wallet. No suspicious activity has been observed on his credit card. He was advised to cancel his credit card and contact the Registry of Motor Vehicles about a new license. The Ring camera did not capture any activity at the front of the house. Their dog was barking at 12:30 a.m., but they did not hear anyone in the driveway. The vehicle was entered in NCIC as stolen. A short time later, a fax was received from Northeast Adjustment Bureau that the vehicle was towed. It was then removed from NCIC as stolen.

 

Belmont Police responded to four mental health and two domestic calls Dec. 6-13.
