Belmont Police Log, Nov. 29 to Dec. 5: Road rage in Claflin Street parking lot, Belmont woman out $40,000 due to account hack, severe damage to two properties on Cross Street due to reckless driver
The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
Friday Nov. 29
10:29 a.m.: A Belmont resident said she was working from home and left her laptop on in the evening. She began noticing a great deal of spam popping up and tried clicking out of all of it. She then received a message stating her Fidelity Investments account was locked and the password changed. She contacted Fidelity and learned someone hacked into her account and electronically transferred $40,000 to an unknown entity in Oklahoma. She immediately contacted the company that handles her finances and authorized them to speak on her behalf. They are working with Fidelity’s fraud department to get the $40,000 transferred back into her account. She has checked her credit score, and it does not appear to be affected. She was advised to notify all her financial institutions about the situation.
6:36 p.m.: Collision at the intersection of Trapelo Road and Williston Road between a 2021 Toyota operated by a Waltham woman and a 2020 Honda operated by a Belmont woman. The Toyota struck the Honda in the rear when it stopped for a pedestrian in the crosswalk. Waltham woman was issued a citation for following too closely.
Saturday, Nov. 30
10:19 p.m.: A 2023 Cadillac operated by a Belmont man collided into a white vinyl fence on Cross Street, causing major damage, damaging several evergreen shrubs lining the driveway adjacent to the fence and knocking down a “No Turn on Red” and “To Request Green Wait On (bicycle symbol) street sign. The driver left the scene of the accident. There were several motor vehicle parts left at the scene, which helped officers identify a potential vehicle based on the color and factory sticker labels on the parts. A witness observed the Cadillac veer across the lane, jump the curb, strike the street sign and crash through the fence, then exit the driveway and proceed to turn around on Cross Street, heading eastbound on Brighton Street. He said the vehicle did not stop or slow down prior to the accident. He took two photos of the vehicle. Belmont Police were able to locate the home where the vehicle is registered and observed the suspected vehicle in the driveway with severe front-end damage, damage along the sides, hood and two flat tires on the passenger side. A Belmont Police officer contacted the owner who admitted to driving the vehicle and being in an accident. He said he dropped a lit cigarette and spilled coffee on his lap. He said he didn’t stay at the scene or contact the police because he did not want to bother anyone at that time of night. A criminal complaint will be filed for operating to endanger, three counts of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and marked lanes violation. The owners of two homes where there was damage were advised about contacting their homeowners’ insurance companies and how to obtain a copy of the police report.
Tuesday, Dec. 3
10:51 a.m.: A hit and run in the employee parking lot at 405 Concord Ave. A post office employee said there was damage to the driver’s side and rear of her vehicle, consisting of small scratches with small dents. She does not know how the damage occurred.
12:55 p.m.: A hit and run reported at the Bank of America parking lot on Trapelo Road. A Medford resident said she was parked between a handicap spot and a dumpster when a black sedan pulled into the space next to her, hitting her vehicle, then pulling out of the space and driving off. She did not see the driver and has no other information about the vehicle. Belmont Police will investigate the video surveillance to see if the incident was caught on one of the outside cameras.
4:40 p.m.: A two-car collision on Trapelo Road between a 2018 Subaru operated by a Waltham resident and a 2022 Toyota operated by a Waltham resident. The Subaru was struck from behind while in traffic by the Toyota. The operator of the Toyota was issued a citation for failure to stop/yield and no inspection sticker.
6:11 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported vandalism. She heard noise on her porch, like someone was hitting the railings. Her husband later noticed their Christmas candy cane decorations that run along the path to their residence were cut. The value of the decorations is approximately $50. The Belmont Police officer could not locate door cameras in the area.
Wednesday, Dec. 4
12:02 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported his daughter’s bicycle stolen from Belmont High School bike rack on Nov 26. It was placed on the rack closest to Clay Pit pond next to the walking path. It was not locked. The bike is a Fairdale, light blue with a black woven backet on the back and a helmet. The total value is $950. Video surveillance shows a black male in his mid to late 20s wearing a hood, walk up to the bike and ride away towards Hittinger Street.
4:04 p.m.: A disturbance in the Claflin Street parking lot. A Belmont resident said a man smashed her windshield. She was driving into the parking lot from Alexander Avenue and observed an older white male and two older white females walking in the middle of the road. She drove slowly, waiting for the road to clear so she could continue into the parking lot. The older white male turned around and yelled something about his mother being elderly. They cleared the roadway, and she continued on her way, parking behind CVS, facing Cross Street. As she exited her 2022 Honda, the older white male jumped over the fence in front of her car and charged her. She got back into her car, shut the door and the man smashed his fist on her windshield, breaking the glass in front of the driver’s seat. She described him as six feet tall, skinny, wearing a dark-colored jacket, hat and blue jeans. She believes they were parked in handicap spots in the back corner of the Claflin Street parking lot. She was unable to see the type of car he drove or license plate. No cameras overlooking the area where the incident occurred could be located. Belmont Police will check the meter to see if they can identify a license plate.
Thursday, Dec. 5
9:26 a.m.: Collision at the intersection of Common and Washington Streets with injuries between a 2024 Mini operated by a Watertown woman and a 2019 Subaru operated by a Belmont woman. Belmont Fire and Rescue also responded. The operator of the Mini said she was struck on the driver’s side by the Subaru. Her airbags deployed. She was complaining of stiffness and transported to Mount Auburn Hospital. The operator of the Subaru said she was stopped at a stop sign on Hastings Road at Common Street. She thought it was safe to cross towards Washington Street. Due to the freezing rain and fog on her front windshield, she said she did not see the mini approaching on her right. She was issued a citation for failure to yield to right of way at an intersection.
6:12 p.m.: A collision at the intersection of School and Washington Street between a 2015 Kia operated by a Belmont man and a parked 2018 Lexus operated by a Belmont woman. The Kia attempted to leave the scene and revved its engine several times as the officer approached the driver’s side window. He was issued a citation for marked lanes violation and operating under the influence. His vehicle was towed. The Lexus was also towed from the scene. It sustained heavy damage to its left side rear and its left rear wheel was off its axel.
7:06 p.m.: Landlord-Tenant dispute. The tenant was issued an eviction notice from her landlord. Her landlord already removed some of her belongings. She was advised an eviction is a civil matter and to follow up with Cambridge District Court. She also accused her landlord of throwing away some of her personal belongings. The landlord denied throwing out any of her property. She stored it inside a cabinet under the kitchen island because the apartment needed to be cleaned for showings. She told officers there have been problems due to the tenant not paying her rent, which affects her ability to pay the. Mortgage. She also said the tenant took the key which is preventing her from locking the apartment. She was advised to notify a locksmith to rekey or change the lock. There was a previous landlord-tenant dispute reported at the same address on Nov. 27.
Arrest
At 4:40 a.m. on Dec. 4, a Belmont male juvenile was arrested on warrant for assault with a dangerous weapon (firearm).
Belmont Police responded to three mental health and two domestic calls between Nov. 28 and Dec. 6.
