Belmont Police Log, Aug. 18-27: Valuable ornaments stolen from Acorn Park storage unit, 12-year-old bicyclist struck, collision into home and much more

The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. 

Friday, Aug. 18

6:23 p.m.: A Gilmore Road resident reported fraudulent activity. She has been a victim many times in the past. Today she received a letter from National Credit Systems informing her of an outstanding balance in her name of $5,915.49. She said someone has been using her name to open these accounts and she doesn’t have outstanding balances. She will check her other accounts for fraudulent activity.

Saturday, Aug. 19

9:51 a.m.: Collision in area of Lexington Street and Trapelo Road between a 2018 Subaru operated by a Belmont woman and a Belmont male bicyclist. The cyclist was riding his bicycle Westbound in opposite lane of travel when the vehicle came out of nowhere. He was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital. The operator of the Subaru said she was travelling on Agassiz Avenue and was making a left turn on Trapelo Road when she had the green light. Seconds later a bicyclist struck her passenger side door. Her daughter was also in the vehicle but was uninjured. The cyclist was issued a citation for marked lane violation.

12:18 p.m.: A mail carrier was bitten by a dog on Goden Street. There was blood on his left thumb. Belmont Fire also responded. The owner of the dog said she was leaving her house at the same time the mail carrier was delivering the mail. The dog went into protect mode and chased the mail carrier. The mail carrier put out his hands to keep the dog away from him, which is when the dog bit his hand. It was a mixed breed. The owner provided proof of the dog’s vaccines. The mail carrier said as he was approaching the door to put mail in the slot, the door opened and he was attacked. He was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital. A copy of the report will be forwarded to the Belmont Board of Health.

Sunday, Aug. 20

12:28 p.m.: An Easton man reported a stolen credit card. Yesterday, at 2:14 p.m. there were several fraudulent charges to his card at the CVS on Trapelo Road. One of the charges was at the ATM and the other two were at the register. Two of the charges did not go through, but one for $105.95 did go through. His bank froze his credit card to prevent more fraudulent charges. He also spoke to the manager of CVS who said he received several calls about fraud that day. He provided the police with a copy of the transcripts for the purchases and will see if an image of the suspect was captured on their video surveillance.

11:25 p.m.: Collision into house in area of White Street and Belmont Street between a 2010 Toyota operated by an Allston man and a 2018 BMW operated by a Plymouth man. The vehicle was against a home on White Street and another vehicle was down the road near a telephone pole. Both vehicles had airbag deployment but both operators were able to free themselves. Both Watertown and Belmont Fire and Rescue also responded. The operator of the BMW said he was traveling Southbound on Waverley Street in Watertown when he came to the intersection of White and Belmont Streets. He was unable to recall if the light was yellow when he went through the intersection. He was struck as he drove through it and struck the curb, travelling over the sidewalk and lawn and striking the corner of the home. He was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital. The operator of the Toyota said he was travelling Westbound on Belmont Street. When he came to the intersection, a vehicle crashed into him causing him to veer off 100 feet and end up at the light pole. He was complaining about right knee, leg and chest pain and was transported to Mass General Hospital. The owner of the home was notified by one of his tenants. A town building inspector was also called to assess the damage. There was severe damage to both vehicles, which were towed from the scene. After further investigation, the operator of the BMW was issued a citation for failure to stop.

Monday, Aug. 21

7:50 a.m.: A Connecticut woman reported larceny of a laptop. It was stolen from her rental property on Moraine Street. She was there Aug. 20^th and left at 7 p.m. When she returned at 9 p.m., she noticed her MacBook Pro 13 valued at $1,250 was missing. She was advised to speak to all people who have access to the apartment. She was assisted in locking the laptop and reporting it stolen through the Find My App on her cell phone.

2:16 p.m.: A Hingham man reported fraud. On Aug. 19 at 2 p.m Hingham Savings Bank sent him an alert that his card was breached five times at Belmont CVS on Trapelo Road. At 3:15 p.m., he asked CVS if someone made five Visa card purchases. Five charges were made with his debit card totaling $534. Officers tried to obtain the video but were told the surveillance has been down for several days, but were given the number of the CVS loss prevention department to help them obtain the video.

3:02 p.m.: An Olmstead Drive resident reported annoying phone calls. She received two suspicious phone calls, one at 2:15 p.m from 617-882-4204. The caller ID said Newton. The caller had a heavy Indian accent and said his name was Robert Daniels. He said he worked for the Federal Government and that several bank accounts were opened in her name in Texas at several different banks. The money in the accounts were being used to smuggle money, drugs and fake ids from Columbia, Mexico. He needed her to provide him with her social security number to put a hold on it and give her a new one. She suspected it was fraud and hung up. However, five minutes later another call came in from the same person at a different number, 915-585-1924. This time, the caller ID said, “United States Government.” He told her if she did not cooperate a warrant for her arrest would be issued. She said she was going to call the police and hung up the phone. Officers tried calling both numbers and they were disconnected.

Tuesday, Aug. 22

1:48 p.m.: Acorn Park Drive resident reported a stolen bicycle. The resident was informed by neighbors that her bike was missing from the secure storage area. She last saw it two to three weeks ago. It is a gray Cannondale 11-speed bike with a pedal bag and upgraded tires, valued at $1,400.

Wednesday, Aug. 23

8:17 a.m.: Collision at intersection of Concord Avenue and Leonard Street between a 2011 Mazda operated by a Lawrence man and a 2018 Ford operated by a Newton man. The Mazda was off the roadway with front end against a stone retaining wall outside the property on 7 Channing Road (Chase Bank). Belmont Fire and Rescue also responded. The operator of the Ford said he was unable to stop in time because the Mazda crossed in front of him. The operator of the Mazda was unable to speak due to his state of consciousness. A Witness said she saw the Mazda enter the intersection from Concord Avenue when it was struck by the Ford and lost control. She believes the Mazda was operating erratically. A second witness said he observed the Mazda travel through the intersection, striking the Ford, then losing control and crashing into the stone wall. He does not know if the vehicle stopped at the stop sign but also said it was operating erratically. The operator of the Mazda was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital and towed from the scene. The operator of the Mazda later gave a statement claiming the Ford was travelling at a high rate of speed and a truck was obstructing his few. He was issued a citation for failure to yield.

2:22 p.m.: Weber Road resident reported a stolen license plate from his 2011 Ford. She noticed it was missing from the rear of her vehicle and saw a screwdriver and two screws on the ground in the parking lot near where she parked. A neighbor had a camera pointed in the direction of where the vehicle was parked.  Officers requested if the neighbors could look through the video and email them any images that may have captured the theft as it occurred. The license was entered into CJIS as stolen.

3:13 p.m.: Rockland Trust on Concord Avenue reported attempted fraud. A bank employee said that at approximately 3:08 p.m. a white male, approximately 50-60 years old with gray hair, pony tail and jeans attempted to access someone else’s bank account. He attempted to make a checking withdrawal using a passport card. They were able to retrieve the money back from the man before he exited on foot. Officers were unable to locate the male party. They were informed he was successful in withdrawing $5,000 from a Rockland branch in Newton earlier that day at 12:55 p.m. The owner of the account said the bank made him aware of in the incident. The bank provided the police with photos of the man.

11:14 p.m.: A 2017 Audi in area of 181 Winter St. operated by a Watertown man collided into a large boulder. He was complaining of pain in his shin and shoulder. The airbags deployed and there was damage to the undercarriage and all four tires. Belmont Fire and Rescue also responded. He said he was looking at the GPS on his dashboard when he struck the rock.

Thursday, Aug. 24

2:35 p.m.: Weber Road resident reported Smartphone stolen. She ordered an Iphone 14 from Xfinity. The package was delivered but the box was empty. She was advised by Xfinty to file a police report to receive a replacement phone. It is valued at $1,100.

5:25 p.m.: A 2019 Audi operated by a Winchester man struck a Belmont male cyclist, 12, in the area of 284 Trapelo Road. The bicycle was trapped under the front of the vehicle. The cyclist was ok, but shocked. The operator of the Audi said he was exiting the CVS parking lot, turning left onto Trapelo Road. While crossing over, he was struck by the bicyclist. A friend of the bicyclist who was riding with in front of him said they were heading to the Town Field.The cyclist was thrown off the bicycle when it was struck. The operator of the Audi was issued a citation for failure to yield.

Friday, Aug. 25

9:57 a.m: An Acorn Park Drive resident reported theft of property. A tote containing 200 family heirloom ornaments was missing from a locked storage unit, valued at $4,000 to $5,000. The storage cages are rented by residents. Only two other cages were occupied. The heavy duty padlock they used to lock it appeared to be cut. The entrance door to the storage room does not have a lock on it. She saw a post on EBay for what seemed to be one of her ornaments. She will send the link to the officers. They were advised to contact the police if they see other items of theirs for sale.

2:45 p.m.: A Thomas Street resident reported suspicious activity. Earlier this morning at 1:06 a.m. she got a notification about motion detected on her camera. She looked out her window and saw three teenagers on the street. She reviewed the recording of her Blink camera and saw an unknown individual open the screen to her front door. Then, the individual quickly ran down the steps and disappeared off screen. She was able to give officers a copy of the camera footage.

Saturday, Aug. 26

2:12 p.m.: A green United States mailbox was damaged at the intersection of Slade Street and Trapelo Road. It appeared to be struck by a motor vehicle. Two of the legs are broken and there are visible dents.

Sunday, Aug. 27

4:24 p.m.: Collision in area of Pleasant and Monroe Streets between a 2018 Ford operated by a California man and a 2015 Toyota operated by a Watertown woman. The operator of the Toyota slowed down for a pedestrian in the crosswalk when she was struck from behind by the Ford. The operator of the Ford said he was looking at a house while he was driving by and did not notice the Toyota slowing down. The Ford had significant front end damage and was towed from the scene. The operator of the Ford was issued a citation for following too close.

There were six mental health calls, five domestics, including an arrest for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon between Aug. 18 and Aug. 27.
