Belmont Police Log, Oct 5-10: Dog hit by school bus, porch fire, roll-over collision and more
The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
Saturday, Oct. 5
4:56 p.m.: A white GMC box truck operated by an Acushnet male crashed into a utility pole in front of 790 Pleasant St. The pole was snapped at the base and wires were hanging low above the roadway. Belmont Communications was notified and Belmont Light. Belmont Fire also responded. The road from Pleasant Street at Concord Avenue, Trapelo Road and the Star Market exit was shut down. The operator of the box truck said he was not sure what happened. He may have fallen asleep behind the wheel. The truck he was driving is owned by Enos Home Medical of New Bedford. The truck was towed from the scene.
5:51 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported her wallet was lost while she was walking on Trapelo Road between Common Street and Waverley Square. She later found it opposite CVS, but $15 cash was missing as well as her Massachusetts ID, social security card, Charlie card and debit card. She cancelled the card, but did notice charges she did not recognize at a Belmont store and a Cambridge store. She was advised to contact the social security administration and consider ID protection.
Sunday, Oct. 6
11:40 a.m.: Collision at intersection of Grove and Belmont Streets between a 2018 Toyota operated by a Watertown man and a 2014 Subaru operated by a Belmont man and a 2016 Nissan operated by a Concord man. The Nissan struck the Toyota from behind then made a U-turn on Grove Street, went into reverse and struck the Subaru. The Subaru was towed from the scene. The operator of the Nissan was issued a citation for marked lanes violation.
11:59 a.m: A Vincent Avenue resident reported someone tried to enter their vehicle unsuccessfully. The surveillance camera showed a white male wearing baggy blue jeans, sneakers, a hooded sweatshirt and a surgical mask entering the victim’s driveway, lifting the right door handle of the 2018 Subaru, which was locked. The suspect then leaves the view of the camera.
Monday, Oct. 7
9:13 a.m: A Belmont resident reported ongoing harassment from neighbors trespassing on his property. He said this has been going on for many years. He has contacted a lawyer and would like the incidents documented.
1:20 p.m.: Identity fraud reported by a Belmont resident. She received two letters, one from Citizens Bank and the other from Capital One, concerning accounts she tried to open. She did not attempt to open the accounts. She also discovered someone attempted to open an Experian digital checking account using her information and changed her contact email to a Hotmail account.
5:01 p.m.: Harassment reported by a Belmont resident. Officers spoke to the offending party who said she would stop communicating with the victim.
Tuesday, Oct. 8
7:04 a.m.: A school bus struck a dog at Prospect Street and Clairemont Road. The dog owner was very upset while holding her dog that sustained fatal injuries from the accident. The dog ran into the street chasing the bus, but the bus driver did not stop. The dog did not have a collar or leash.
9:59 a.m: Collision at intersection of Trapelo Road and Mill Street between a 2023 Chevrolet operated by an Everett man and a 2016 Hyundai operated by an Arlington woman. Both drivers said a construction worker suddenly stepped into the road and raised his hand for the traffic to stop. The operator of the Chevrolet said he applied his brakes quickly and the operator of the Hyundai said she did too but there was not enough time to avoid colliding.
10:40 a.m.: Identity fraud reported by a Belmont resident. She received a call from 617-874-2190 from a woman with a heavy accent stating she was with Medicare and needed to send her another card. She asked for her social security number. The victim gave it to her before realizing it was a scam. She was advised to contact Social Security and put fraud alerts on all her accounts.
11:57 a.m.: Collision at the Belmont Center railroad bridge between a 2021 Honda operated by a Belmont woman and a 2022 Ford operated by a Mattapan woman. The operator of the Honda was traveling on Leonard Street when she was struck by the Ford. The operator of the Ford said she was making a right turn from Concord Avenue onto Leonard Street when she crashed into the Honda. The Mattapan woman was issued a citation for failure to stop/yield.
1:49 p.m.: Roll-over collision at intersection of Belmont Street and Vincent Avenue between a 2010 Volkswagen operated by a Waltham woman and a 2015 Subaru operated by a Watertown man. The operator of the Volkswagen was with her husband. There was heavy front-end damage to the Volkswagen and smashed glass on the top half of the front windshield. Both airbags deployed. The vehicle was towed. The operator of the Subaru said he was pulling out of Wilson Avenue in Watertown onto Belmont Street and trying to cross straight over and continue to Vincent Avenue when the Volkswagen crashed into him, causing his vehicle to roll over and land on the roof. He managed to free himself from the vehicle. He was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital. The operator of the Subaru was issued a citation for failure to stop/yield.
11:31 p.m.: Hit and run reported at intersection of Marsh Street and Concord Avenue. A 2024 Honda owned by a Belmont resident was parked outside 399 Marsh St. When she returned to her vehicle, she observed moderate damage to the front left and front.
Wednesday, Oct. 9
7:34 p.m.: Porch fire at 25 Cuter Street. One of the residents said he was on the second floor porch smoking a cigarette. When he was done, he put it out in a cardboard box that was on the porch. He then went back inside the house. Later, the doorbell rang and when he went downstairs a neighbor was yelling that the porch was on fire. He ran upstairs and go a bucket of water and brought it to the porch. There were flames against the house and they all threw water on the flames. The owner of the home said he has never had any issues with the tenants in the past. The tenant informed him about the fire. He said there is no smoking allowed on the property.
Thursday, Oct. 10
9:21 a.m.: Acorn Park Drive resident reported threats. He was speaking to someone on the Grindr app who had a blank profile and did not send any pictures. He used the name, “Sean.” He asked him if he was into younger men and he said he was, clarifying men above the age of consent. He gave his full name and name of apartment complex to the person, but did not give his apartment number. He is concerned he will be found because he gave his name. The person threatened to expose him and confront him the next day. He was then blocked on the app. This morning someone he did not know rang his apartment number and left. A photo of the person taken on the intercom showed a white female with dark shoulder length hair. There was another person behind her, but out of the frame. IT is not clear if these incidents are related. He later heard a tap on his window. He will be calling a friend to stay with him.
10:50 a.m.: Collision at a construction site at the intersection of Mill and Lorimer Streets. A tractor was reversing at the orders of a detail officer when it struck another parked construction vehicle causing damage.
Belmont Police responded to two mental health calls between Oct. 5 and Oct. 11.
