Belmont Police Log, June 10-16: Overnight car break-ins, bicyclist struck, house egged and more

The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. 

Monday, June 10

10:16 a.m.: A Waltham man reported a break-in. He works for a company that owns a property on Marlboro Street currently being renovated and unoccupied. Someone took cameras from the front and side of the home. He showed officers three videos dated June 9, showing a male wearing a mask, dressed in dark jeans, a black-hooded sweatshirt and slides. He walked past the front of the house at 8:45 p.m. and is seen on the video walking down the driveway with a green bag under his right arm. He then removed the front camera and placed it in the green bag he was carrying. You can’t see his face or any other identifying characteristics. A camera was also taken from the right side of the home. The cameras were purchased from Amazon are valued at $80 each. This is the second time since May that cameras have been stolen.

11:38 p.m.: A suspicious person was reported in the area of Cushing Avenue. His son came home at around 10:30 p.m. and noticed a bald white male, medium build, standing with no shirt on, smoking a cigarette, outside a gray SUV parked across from the home. He noticed the vehicle parked on the street since 9:30 p.m. He did not recognize the individual or the vehicle. The vehicle drove off 15 minutes before police arrived. He took a 60-second video of the suspicious person and showed it to the officers. Officers observed the male wearing a red-colored t-shirt with white lettering and standing with rear passenger side open, grab something in the back seat and exit the vehicle, and walked over to the rear of the UPS store and appeared to be fumbling with something, possibly a set of keys and enters the rear of the store. Officers checked the front and back entrances of the store and did not observe any signs of forced entry. Officers searched for the SUV but were unable to locate it.

Tuesday, June 11

11:18 a.m.: Collision in area of Common Street and Orchard Street between a 2015 Lexus operated by a Dover woman and a 2012 Toyota operated by a Watertown woman. There were no injuries. The operator of the Lexus said she stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross and without warning she was rear-ended. The operator of the Toyota said she tried to stop but was too close. The operator of the Toyota was issued a citation for following too close. 

 

7:40 p.m.: Collision in area of Beech Street and Wilson Avenue involving a 2014 Toyota operated by a Belmont woman and a middle-school age male bicyclist. The operator of the Toyota said she saw a boy crossing the road in front of her and an ambulance. When she turned left, the same boy was on the left and suddenly crossed in front of her. She did not have time to stop. He flipped over and landed on the grass strip of the sidewalk. A witness said he saw the boy cut across Trapelo Road and then cut across his vehicle and the other vehicle. He then saw him cross in front of an oncoming vehicle on Beech Street. The boy sustained injury to his right leg and was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital. 

Wednesday, June 12

2:51 p.m.: An Elizabeth Road resident reported a stolen bicycle from the area of the Belmont Middle and High School between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Her son put his bicycle on the bike rack at the middle school entrance. It was not locked to the bike rack. When he left the building at 1 p.m., it was missing. It was a Specialized Rock Hopper blue mountain bike valued at $488 with a broken kickstand and a sticker with his name and phone number on it.

4:44 p.m.: A Moraine Street resident reported damage to their motor vehicle, a 2011 Jeep. He believes his vehicle was keyed some time overnight. He parked his vehicle in the lot of a repair shop the previous morning and today he observed scratches on the left rear and side of the vehicle. 

5:32 p.m.: A three-car collision in the area of Brighton and Pleasant Street between a 2024 Lexus operated by a Watertown man, a 2023 Volkswagen operated by an Arlington woman and a 2020 Toyota operated by a Medford man. The operator of the Lexus was uninjured. The passenger in the Volkswagen had injuries. The operator of the Volkswagen said her vehicle was parked in the parking lot on the corner of Brighton and Pleasant when it suddenly took off and struck a stone wall, a “no parking” sign, a sign for bicycles and a traffic light. The vehicle accelerated and she tried to pull the wheel to avoid hitting pedestrians and then struck a vehicle on Pleasant Street head-on. The operator of the Toyota was uninjured. He was stopped at the red light at the intersection behind the Lexus. Both the Lexus and Volkswagen had major front-end damage and were towed from the scene. The Toyota had minor damage to the front. The passenger of the Volkswagen was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital and Belmont Light and the highway department responded to the scene.  

Thursday, June 13

12:58 p.m.: A Watertown resident reported possible larceny of a check. In 2020, she was expecting a tax return check for $2,942.22 from the IRS. However, she never received it and believes it was due to the fact she moved to Watertown. She previously resided in Belmont until 2023. She filed with the IRS who informed her they would need a police report to investigate this further.

7:26 p.m.: Collision in the area of Trapelo and White Street between a 2015 Audi operated by a Belmont woman and a Waltham man riding an electric scooter. The accident occurred at approximately 6:26 p.m. The operator of the Audi was going to turn left onto White Street when an unknown vehicle waved her on to turn. While turning, an electric scooter crashed into the rear of her vehicle. The man on the scooter said he was not injured. She offered him a ride home and they exchanged phone numbers. At about 7:26 p.m., the operator of the scooter came into the Belmont police station with loosely wrapped gauze taped on his left arm and elbow area. He was evaluated by Belmont Fire and Rescue and signed a patient refusal form. He said he was in traffic on Trapelo Road. He tried to avoid the collision but crashed into the vehicle, which sustained minor damage. His scooter was moderately damaged in the front and rear.

Friday, June 14

9:09 a.m.: A Howard Street resident reported a stolen license plate. It belonged to a 2016 Subaru. Some time over the last couple of days, she noticed the front license plate was missing. She is unsure where the theft could have taken place. She filled out a stolen license plate form and the license plate was entered into CJIS.criminal justice information system, 

1:24 p.m.: A Collision in the area of Pleasant and Lake Street between a 2009 Chevy operated by a Waltham woman. The vehicle went off the roadway and landed in the median. The operateor was uninjured. She said she was traveling in heavy rain and could no longer see the road in front of her. There was moderate damage to the front of her vehicle. It was towed from the scene. She was issued a citation for marked lanes violation.

4:22 p.m.: A Barnard Road resident reported identity theft. He received a letter in the mail on June 7 regarding a data breach that occurred on May 9 and may have compromised his personal information. He has been in contact with his bank for false charges being made on his account. He also received a purchased authorization code from Home Depot for a purchase he didn’t’ make. He will continue to work with the bank about the fraudulent charges.

7:37 p.m.: A Concord Avenue resident reported a suspicious event. A few minutes before she called, an Amazon delivery person opened her door and placed a package on the kitchen floor. She is unsure why the driver stepped inside her house She was advised to call back if the incident happens again.

Saturday, June 15

9:46 a.m.: A Vincent Avenue resident reported damage to their property. At some point between 6 p.m. June 14 and 9 a.m. on June 15, the window of her front door was shattered. There were no objects in the glass. The glass was still in the frame but spidered. No other doors or window were damaged. She is unsure who would have done this.

1:19 p.m.: A Jackson Road resident reported larceny of a bicycle at Belmont High School The student said he parked his car on a bike rack under the overhang at the entrance of the school. He is unsure if it was locked. It was not there in the afternoon. It was a black, Sirius hybrid 8-speed bike with medium-sized tires and a light in the front, valued at $1,000. 

4:26 p.m.: A Criminal complaint against a Hoitt Road resident for disorderly conduct. 

9:57 p.m.: A Farm Road resident reported house egged. The suspects were headed to the area of the Underwood Pool. The son chased the suspects who had coverings on their face and CVS bags on their head to cover their identity. This has been an ongoing issue for the homeowners. They believe they know who it is and Belmont Police will be investigating.

Sunday, June 16

3:24 a.m.: A Hough Road resident reported a potential attempted vehicle theft. When officers arrived, the suspects fled the area. The reporting party said he woke up at 3 a.m. and was unable to go back to bed. He saw headlights flashing into his window and went to the side door connecting to the driveway to see what was going on. When he opened the door, he saw two males, either black or Hispanic, wearing dark clothing, looking inside his vehicles. He was pulling on the door handle of a vehicle, which was locked. The other suspect opened the front door of his Jeep and was rummaging through. He yelled at them and they drove off in a white sedan style vehicle with red or blue markings on the front bumper. He as seen the vehicle in the neighborhood before. They drove off at a high rate of speed towards Lexington. There does not seem to be anything missing from the vehicles. Officers were unable to locate the suspect’s vehicle.

10:47 a.m.: A Robinwood Road resident said they observed Ring video. from early this morning, showing three people entering their driveway with flashlights and trying to enter the cars, a 2016 Acura and a 2009 Lexus, which was locked. The video also shows the home across the street with driveway sensor lights lit. Officers asked the homeowners to keep the video in case it is needed in the near future.

11:12 a.m.: A Bartlett Road resident reported a motor vehicle break-in, a 2018 Toyota. He parked his vehicle in his driveway at 6:30 p.m. It was unlocked. He observed the middle console was open and $12 to $15 cash was missing and the nine-volt outlet cap was taken and broken off. When officers returned, they received a call. His neighbor who he shares a driveway with had video footage showing three males exit the vehicle and enter his driveway. Officers requested the video to be emailed to them.

Between June 10 and June 16, Belmont Police responded to four domestic violence calls and five mental health calls.
