Belmont Police Log, March 17-23: "Star Market thief steals alcohol and children's bicycles"

The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

March 17

4:49 p.m. Shoplifting reported at Star Market. Two employees said a man comes in every day at 4 p.m. stealing beer. Today he stole two six packs of wine and upon leaving he stole the bicycles of two young girls in the store. One of the employees chased him and took a photo of him crossing Trapelo road with a bottle of wine. One of the children provided a description of the bikes. Officers searched the area and found the bicycles matching the descriptions on Beech Street. They returned the bicycles to the children but were not able to find the suspect.

March 19

8:52 a.m.: Belmont resident reported possible violation of a harassment order. It appears a security camera was possibly moved.

5:33 p.m.: Criminal complaint against a Belmont man for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and speeding.

March 20

3:55 p.m.: School Street resident reported fraud. She was contacted by her bank about a potential wire transfer of $2,000 out of Nairobi, Kenya. This account they called about was shut down due to fraudulent reasons in 2019. The transfer did not go through. The wire was requested to be sent to Equity bank in Thika, Kenya. She did not recognize the name on the wire transfer. The note claimed it was for charity from the pandemic. She provided a copy of the letter which has her address and bank she uses. She believes this could be from a stolen check in 2019. Officers advised her to send her mail directly from the post office if it includes a check.

7:15 p.m.: Burnham Road resident reported noise complaint. The upstairs neighbors have been banging on their floor. They believe this is being done intentionally. They have been having an ongoing issue with the neighbors concerning noise made by both parties. Officers met with both parties and advised them to attempt to be quieter. If this continues they can attempt to obtain harassment prevention orders.

March 21

10:16 a.m.: Woodcomb Street resident reported a suspicious event. While on a Zoom meeting, an unknown person joined the meeting and began displaying pornography and images of swastika on the screen. Attempts were made to stop this activity. However, everyone had to leave the meeting. It is not known who the guilty party was.

2:51 p.m.: Collision in area of Belmont Street and Lewis Road between a 2022 Ford operated by a West Roxbury man and a 2012 Honda operated by a Revere woman. Upon arrival, officers observed the operator of the Honda sitting on the sidewalk. She was very distressed. Her right wrist was bruised. Belmont Fire and Rescue provided medical treatment. The operator of the Ford was attempting to make a left turn onto Carver Road. He said someone stopped and waived him on to make a left turn which is when he collided with the Honda. The Honda sustained heavy damage to the front driver’s side. The Ford sustained moderate damage to the front of the vehicle. The operator of the Honda was transported to Mass General Hospital. The Honda was towed.

3:05 p.m.: A Statler Road resident reported missing property. Her son misplaced his violin. They have been unable to find it. She emailed the teacher about the missing instrument and she has not been able to locate it. The company they rent it from requires a police report.

6:18 p.m.: Foster Road resident reported unemployment fraud. He was informed by his employer’s human resources department that someone filed for unemployment benefits in his name. He reported it to the Massachusetts Office of Unemployment Fraud Division.

7:51 p.m.: Officers responded to an issue on Beech Street between two property owners who share a driveway. Each of the owners have been putting items in the middle of the driveway they share to divide the property line such as a fence and cinder blocks. This is causing problems for the tenants. They will be going to court to try to settle the matter.

March 22

2:56 p.m.: A Pine Street business reported destruction of property. An employee said a customer requested elicit services. When they refused the customer left the business upset. They believe he threw a rock at the front of the building in retaliation causing the glass on the door to break. The value is approximately $1,400.

6:40 p.m.: Officers spoke to a Belmont resident concerning larceny of prescription drugs. She said an acquaintance from New Hampshire dropped by her house unannounced. She asked if she could use her bathroom. Shortly after she left, she noticed nearly her whole prescription was gone. When she went to refill the prescription at CVS they said she needed a police report.

7:19 p.m.: Watertown man reported an accident between him and a motorist. He was riding his bicycle in the vicinity of the rotary at Washington Street and Grove Street. As he entered Blanchard Road, a motor vehicle hit the rear of his bicycle. The operator of the Toyota continued to aggressively drive up behind him until he was able to pass. When the Toyota was in front of him, the driver kept hitting the brakes as he attempted to continue cycling. He believes the driver was trying to run him off the road. He admits striking the side of the vehicle with his hand and yelling at the driver, but did not cause damage. The Toyota then drove off. There was no damage to his bicycle and he was uninjured. He said it was a white Toyota Camry with a commercial registration. He provided the license plate and wanted it documented.

March 23

11:06 a.m.: Officers responded to a collision in the area of Waverley Street and Shean Road. between a 2014 Ford operated by a Natick man and a Belmont man who was running on foot. The operator of the Ford said he was driving on Shean Road and came to a stop prior to the crosswalk. He looked both ways and didn’t see anyone until he proceeded to continue driving when a male came running from his passenger side into the crosswalk. He slammed on his brakes and does not believe he made contact with the male who fell to the ground. A fence on the property adjacent to the road was blocking his view. The pedestrian said he was running on the sidewalk of Waverley Street. He tried to jump out of the way to avoid being hit and does not believe he was struck. He slammed his knee on the ground trying to avoid impact. He was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital. There did not appear to be any damage on the vehicle.

2:36 p.m.: A White Street resident reported fraud. A friend recommended she invest with a firm he’s been working for. She wrote a check for $172,000 to Elite Building, LLC. She was given a promissory note on March 8, 2022, signed by a manager of the company and witnessed by an attorney. The note said they would pay her the sum of $192,000 on or before June 8, 2022. Officers advised her to seek an attorney to proceed further.

 

Belmont police responded to five domestic and three mental health calls between March 17-23, 2023.

 

Arrest

A Belmont woman, 59, was arrested on a warrant for reporting a false crime on March 23 at 12:12 p.m.
