Belmont Police warn residents not to put envelopes with checks in mailboxes
Mail from mailboxes in Belmont and surrounding towns is getting stolen, according to Belmont Police Lt. Kristin Daley.
Most recently, reports were received by Belmont residents who had mail stolen from a mailbox located at Beech Street and Trapelo Road.
Checks were washed and people attempted to cash them for large sums, said Daley.
"The best thing for people to do is to bring their mail to the post office during business hours," she said.
If you are unable to get to the post office, then you should put the mail in a box the first thing in the morning during the week so it will be picked up that same day.
The most recent stolen mail was put in the mailbox during the weekend.
"It appears that Sunday, late in the evening, is when it was stolen," said Daley.
